When a Prince can turn into a Frog

It's every girl's dream to meet a Prince and live happily ever after and most girls accept that the process of meeting Mr Prince Right entails kissing a few frogs, so it is a little of a surprise when what starts out as a meeting with a Prince ends up being a relationship with a proverbial Frog.

Let's backtrack for a moment and I will explain what I am talking about. When South African law student Chelsy Davy met Prince Harry (an heir to the British throne) it was the kind of fairy tale romance most girls dream about. Harry, young, handsome and a member of Britain's Royal Family, was a catch most girls would die for. Chelsy, clever, beautiful and independent, intent on having a career of her own, epitomised the empowered female beauty of the 21st century.

So, what went wrong? Beyond the fact that this, like any modern romance these days, was subject to the same pressures which afflict any modern, sometimes long-distance, relationship it was also conducted under the inevitable limelight of its provenance and had the additional hurdles to overcome of it being one-sided.

Harry, Prince though he may be and probably charming, also stood Chelsy up at the airport allowing her to wait a whole 40 minutes after her flight came in and, back in October, chose to go and watch a World Rugby match with his mates over going to her birthday party.

These are just two instances we know about and I am willing to bet there are many more. The point is that the relationship appeared to be one-sided with one party being unable to meet the expectations of the other. When this happens the end is usually in sight and it is a case of when rather than if.

It takes little more than lack of effort for a prince charming to turn into a frog. It also highlights the fact that though some people may try if they are unable to work at their relationship they probably do not want it badly enough in which case a split is better than prolonging arguments, disappointments and a relationship which is doing neither partner much good.

Chelsy announced her split from Harry on Facebook when she changed her profile from ‘In a relationship' to ‘Single'. It was a case of realising that the right prince charming for her would be someone other than Prince Harry. It was also a case of having the strength of character to say that what she wanted in a relationship was companionship, love and happiness and she was not willing to compromise just for the sake of social status. It is this last action that we must all applaud and emulate if we are to find the right partner to be happy with.
